Fritz and I were greatly encouraged by the reception we got at the CSUN 2006 workshop. It seems that lots of people are trying to (or having to) create accessible web-based video. We hope that our input has been helpful to those of you who participated.
Here are some points I can think of offhand that are worth repeating or emphasizing from the workshop:
- To optimize the accessibility of our video, our approach has been to provide our viewers with as many options as possible so that they can select the method that works best for them.
- We have also attempted to work out ways of delivering these different options with as much efficiency as possible. Thus, we use applications that perform multiple tasks, and we reuse information as much as possible.
- If you try to go through our materials or if you try other, different technologies, you'll probably discover that many do not work. You may have success just by changing some of the variables, such as browser, computer, operating system, where the files are located. Even the browser version can affect performance. We discovered, for example, that neither Safari nor Firefox played Media Player movies from the hard drive on any of our Macs; however, the Safari that played on the workshop iMacs worked just fine. This is yet another reason to use a variety of different methods.
The PowerPoints, handouts, and contents of the CD are located in David Klein's publications pages at this address: http://disability.law.uiowa.edu/lhpdc/publications/documents/kleinetal/kleinthompsoncsun2006.html .
Please feel free to post comments and questions in this forum. We would like to hear about your experiences and get feedback on our own.
